3 Benefits To Getting A Cake With Fondant Icing Over Traditional Buttercream Icing

Posted on

If you are in the market for a cake, you have likely noticed that there are two types of icing that is used the most often: fondant and buttercream. Buttercream icing is the most traditional and generally viewed as the tastiest option. However, fondant icing is starting to become more popular.

Here are three benefits to getting a cake with fondant icing instead of buttercream icing:

1. Fondant icing doesn't melt like buttercream icing does.

Buttercream is made primarily out of butter, cream, and sugar. Because of those being the main ingredients in the icing, it can melt very easily and quickly in warm temperatures. Fondant icing has a consistency that is more like dough than icing. This means that it will not melt very easily when it is in hot room or outside in the heat. This is largely why many will choose fondant icing for wedding cakes. No one wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a wedding cake just to have it become a melted mess by the time the wedding reception begins.

2. The cake decorator can do so much more with fondant icing.

Because fondant icing is more like dough, it is much more pliable. That means the cake decorator can do so much more with it when decorating your cake. You have likely seen wedding cakes with fancy bows and decorations or cakes that look like real cars or other cool things. All of those cakes have likely been covered in fondant icing because buttercream icing can't be molded like fondant can. So, if you want to have one of those cakes in an interesting shape or with a lot of 3-D designs, you will need to get it in fondant icing instead of buttercream.

3. You can avoid dairy sensitivity issues with fondant.

As previously mentioned, dairy is a major part of making buttercream icing. Because of this, a lot of people have to skip eating the cake if they can't handle all of the dairy involved in making it. If you want to have a  cake so you can avoid any potential issues with dairy allergies, you will need to get one with fondant icing. Fondant doesn't use any dairy as an ingredient at all, so your lactose-intolerant guests can enjoy the icing on your cake without experiencing a lot of negative side effects.

When you go in to have a cake made for your wedding or other special event, ask about their fondant work. Be sure the baker has a lot of good experience working with fondant because it can be extremely difficult to use. Don't just take the baker's word for it that they can do a pretty fondant cake. You need to ask to see pictures of their past fondant cakes to make sure they can make what you want them to make.
